Hi Chris and Belinda, have finally got a good collection of pics to send you.
It took a little longer than I expected but Elle is now a FANTASTIC hunter. All I do is follow along and shoot all the animals she sneaks me in on!!
It almost feels like cheating the way I now know where to go and when to be ready, simply by watching the dog.
Her first trip on her own after having hunted with other experienced dogs she got the most goats out of the 5 other guys on the job. This is without catching a single goat, just creeping in and indicating. I was rapt.
I've taught her hand signals so I can communicate with her when in close to an animal in the bush without alerting it. She hunts very close and frequently looks back to see what I'm doing, its great to trust and understand your dog in the bush.
The first deer is a Sika stag from the Kaimanawas. I got 2 stags the first day and another early the next morning. All these were mostly down to Elle, first finding them and then indicating their direction once we got in closer. Sika are very wary and Elle gave me the edge. I got offers for her from other hunters in the hut that night!
The boar is from the Wanganui bush country where we've been goat hunting. I was sitting on the ridge with Elle having lunch when she stood up, pointed over the side, then hid behind me! A minute later this big boar came walking right up to me. She has got several pigs now and is still scared of them, but will hunt them with encouragement. She likes goats if there are no deer about. Deer are her alltime favourite.
The little deer is a fallow that was beded down in the pungas on the edge of the clearing. Elle smelt it from 100m away and first crept in, then pointed. Elle is so quite when hunting that the sleeping deer didn't wake up, hence my bag over its head!!
Elle looks sulky sitting under the tail line as I've told her to stay, then walked back and crouched to take the photo. She wants to run over and have a pat.
I'll get some more pics soon of Elle with some different animals. With a Vizsla you can hunt anything!!
